Homeschooling socialization

Socialization is an issue that is considered by a lot of people as the most important drawback of homeschooling.

Your Child and Home Schooling: The Socialization Issue
Children in public school spend the day locked up with twenty or thirty other children of the same age and have little contact with adults. When they are at home, watching TV, soccer and homework take up most of the after school time. In contrast, home schooled children are participants in real life and spend much time with their parents, their siblings and with their parent's and siblings' friends.

For the proponents of public schools homeschooling does not provide enough opportunities for children to socialize with other peers. According to them this make these children lack certain interpersonal skills and other important social skills. This however could not be further from the truth.

Homeschooling provide socialization possibilities

It is not fair to say that homeschooled children do not have opportunities to interact with their peers. In fact there are many homeschooling support groups that now provide socialization activities such as excursions where homeschooled children can meet other people of their age. Moreover Christian kids can make friends within the youth groups of their churches thus providing a socialization possibility.

Homeschooling protection from peer pressure

In fact some researchers have proven that children that spend more time with peers can become over dependent on these people. This may eventually lead to lack of self confidence, lack of independent thinking and above all cause a loss of parental influence.

It is therefore important that at this moment of their age where they are most vulnerable we, as parents, we guide them to some proper peer groups. It is only through homeschooling that we can achieve this. So next time that you hear someone talking about socialization problem with homeschooling you will know how to respond.
